Like a magic trick, Florianópolis catches visitors by surprise, showcasing extraordinary attractions. The nickname "Island of Magic" perfectly suits the city - the amount of paradisiacal places helps create the idyllic aura of Santa Catarina's capital. In Floripa, fun and enchantment are the experiences of travelers who cross this capital. The island seems to have been made for you to forget the outside world and live in a fantasy of surreal beauty.
Tourist Attractions
Florianópolis boasts a profusion of beautiful sceneries; its coastline doesn't deviate from the frame of white sands and turquoise blue waters. Due to hosting tourists from all over Brazil and Latin America, much of the coastline is well-equipped with bars, restaurants, and shops. There are so many beaches on the island that they can be categorized. For example, for nightlife excitement: Praia dos Ingleses, Praia Brava, and Jurerê Internacional; for trails and breathtaking views: visit Ilha de Campeche; for families: Ponta das Canas and Sambaqui.
Some beaches combine all these options, such as Praia da Barra da Lagoa, which has calm waves and is surrounded by a lovely fishing village, and another place to visit: the tiny Prainha and its natural pools. The favorite activity of tourists frequenting Floripa's beaches is sandboarding, a form of surfing on sand. This is practiced on the dunes of Joaquina Beach and in the region of Moçambique Beach (the dunes of this beach are located on the way to it).
Adherents of traditional surfing in the water should include Santinho Beach and Armação Beach in their itinerary. With perfect waves and surrounded by forest and mountains, these beaches offer a rustic and charming landscape.
Beyond the Beach
Those who have reserved more than two days to explore Floripa should seek out the São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress, located in Jurerê - the program takes about 2 hours for a visit (including arrival and tour), and for those with limited time, it can be left for the next trip.
Untouched by time, the 18th-century fortress guarantees a spectacular historical program, which concludes with a complete view of the coast. The entrance fee is eight reais, and students pay four reais. Another worthy spot for photos is the city's postcard, the Hercílio Luz Bridge. My suggestion is to visit it at night and position yourself on the continental side of Florianópolis for good photos.
What stands out in Florianópolis is the coexistence of the glamour of upscale neighborhoods with the simplicity of fishing villages. The district of Ribeirão da Ilha is one of these simple places, which preserves remnants from the 18th century. The houses are based on Azorean architecture, and the pace of the city is tranquil. In the district, the Nossa Senhora da Lapa do Ribeirão Church and the Ribeirão da Ilha Ethnological Museum should not be overlooked.
Returning to the city, the Lagoa da Conceição neighborhood has attractions for travelers who still have energy to spend; kayaks, windsurfing boards, and jet skis can be seen cruising the calm waters of the lagoon. If these options don't appeal to you, you can take a schooner or boat tour.
By now, you must be tired of so much sightseeing, but gather your energy to end the day at the Morro da Lagoa viewpoint - the place offers a wonderful view of the coast and the dunes of Joaquina Beach.
Where to Eat
Lagoa da Conceição is one of the most lively regions of the city; there are restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. On Avenida das Rendeiras, there are several restaurants specializing in seafood.
At the Municipal Market, you can also find establishments serving fresh and affordable food. There you can find everything from oysters to cakes and other homemade sweets.
Located south of the island, the Pântano do Sul district is a great choice for lunch. The area has good seafood restaurants, and the best part: prices are lower than in the city.
Where to Shop
Once again, Lagoa da Conceição is the place to go, especially when it comes to shopping. In the city center, you can also spend your money by heading to the north wing, where there are various shops, from shoes to souvenirs.
Florianópolis also stands out for its craftsmanship. To take a piece home, visit the Municipal Market or the Casa da Alfândega, both located on Conselheiro Mafra Street.
